Lower The Drinking Age In The United States The laws for alcohol consumption and use in the United States have changed several times over the past century. The United States has tried prohibition as well as laws requiring a specific age for legal alcohol consumption. None of these measures have had a significant impact on the purposes for which they were designed. For this reason, it would make sense to lower the legal age for alcohol consumption back to the age of eighteen. One of the major reasons it makes sense to lower the legal age for alcohol consumption is because children at the age of eighteen are considered adults. The responsibility given to eighteen year olds includes many opportunities to make decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. Registration for the draft is one of the requirements for all citizens at age eighteen. Even if a person is not actually drafted, the idea that an individual is responsible enough to go to war, carry a firearm, or launch nuclear weapons implies that an eighteen year old is making the same decisions as any other adult. Another right extended to eighteen year olds is the opportunity to vote. The idea that this right is given at the age of eighteen demonstrates trust in the ability to make decisions reserved for adults. Other examples of decisions that can be made at eighteen include smoking, body piercing, and getting tattoos. All of these choices deal with decisions that could impact the body for a lifetime. Smoking is also addictive in the same way as alcohol. Why is smoking a legal choice at eighteen, but not drinking alcohol? If children are trusted at the age of eighteen to go away to college and make their own decisions as ?adults,? why are they not responsible enough to go to a bar or go to the liquor store? These so called ?adults? are responsible to be trusted in serious decisions, but are not allowed the right to consume or purchase alcohol until the age of twenty-one. A second reason that the legal age for alcohol consumption should be lowered is based on the success of other cultures in dealing with this issue. In many countries around the world there is no legal age limit in place. Children as young as five are allowed to drink wine and it is not uncommon to see alcohol served daily as a part of the dinner menu. It is the norm to see children drink wine at a communion service, at a special event, or even in a public event. Several studies show that these cultures have had a significantly small number of problems with alcoholism and drinking and driving incidents. It is my belief that if drinking wasn't considered such a ?taboo? behavior and was simply a way of life, the preoccupation with alcohol would lose its appeal. The final reason that the age limit for alcohol consumption should be lowered is because their is virtually no difference between an eighteen year old and a twenty-one year old. The only thing a twenty-one year old can do that an eighteen year old cannot do is drink and purchase alcohol. What significant changes are made when you turn twenty-one? There are also many people under twenty-one that consume alcohol regardless of the law. Research shows that the number of drinking and driving infractions is the same between people over twenty-one years old as in people under the age of twenty-one. If the issue is drinking and driving then we need to change or enforce driving laws instead of drinking laws. People definitely need to assume responsibility for their choices and their actions. Eighteen year olds should be treated as adults in all situations. Lowering the age for alcohol consumption would enable eighteen year olds to make appropriate choices for their lives. These outbursts are part of what makes living with a star like the Sun so exciting. If that material just fell back into the Sun, wed have some great views of arching filaments draining their material to the solar surface. But, they dont always stick around. The material rides out from the Sun on the solar wind (a stream of charged particles that moves a few hundred kilometers a second (and sometimes faster)). Eventually it arrives at Earth and the other planets, and when it does, it interacts with the magnetic fields of the planets (and moons, such as Io, Europa, and Ganymede).   When the solar wind slams into a world with a magnetic field, powerful electrical currents are set up,  which can have interesting effects, particularly on Earth. Charged particles sizzle in the upper atmosphere (called the ionosphere), and the result is a phenomenon called space weather. The effects of space weather can be as lovely as a display of northern and southern lights and (at Earth) as deadly as a power outage, communications failures, and threats to humans working in space. Interestingly, Venus experiences auroral storms, even though the planet doesnt have its own magnetic field. In this case, particles from the solar wind slam into the planets upper atmosphere and the energy-driven interactions make the gases glow.   These storms have also been seen on Jupiter and Saturn (particularly when northern and southern lights emit strong ultraviolet radiation from those planets polar regions). And, theyve been known to occur on Mars. In fact, the MAVEN mission at Mars measured a very deep-reaching auroral storm on the Red Planet, which the spacecraft began detecting around Christmastime of 2014. The aurora was likely caused as charged particles moving along magnetic field lines in the area, which in turn caused atmospheric gases to be energized.   Saturn has been known to sport auroras, as has the planet Jupiter. Both planets have very strong magnetic fields, and so their existence is no surprise. Saturns are bright in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectrum of light and astronomers usually see them as bright circles of light over the poles. Like Saturns aurorae, Jupiters auroral storms are visible around the poles and are very frequent. They are quite complex, and sport little bright spots that correspond to interactions with the moons Iio, Ganymede, and Europa.   Aurorae arent limited to the largest gas giants. It turns out that Uranus and Neptune also have these same storms caused by interactions with the solar wind. They are detectable with instruments on board Hubble Space Telescope.   The existence of aurorae on other worlds gives planetary scientists a chance to study magnetic fields on those worlds (if they exist), and to trace the interaction between the solar wind and those fields and atmospheres. As a result of this work, theyre getting a much better understanding of the interiors of those worlds, the complexities of their atmospheres, and their magnetospheres.

For some it is the turning of the leaves that make it so memorable. For students, the excitement of a new school year and what that brings is always on the mind. Also on the mind of students, and professional fans alike, is the exhilaration and anticipation of a new season on the gridiron. This past fall I had the unique chance to document this exhilaration in a different manner. I chose to view the game of football through the eyes of science, physical science in particular. And with my own eyes, I will never view a football game in quite the same way again. Dr. Timothy Gay, a professor of physics at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln said, â€Å"Football is a manifestation of physics and it’s something people can relate to. It’s physics in action† (http://physics.unl.edu/outreach/football.html). Dr. Gay is right! What effect does altitude have on the flight of a kicked ball? How do Newton's laws of motion apply to blocking and tackling? What does the science of physics tell me about the best possible chase strategies for defensive backs? To get even simpler, when you throw a football across the yard to a friend, you are using physics. You make adjustments for all the factors, such as distance, wind and the weight of the ball. The farther away your friend is, the harder you have to throw the ball, or the steeper the angle of your throw. This adjustment is done in your head, and even with a soft grip of physics I have from one quarter with Dr. Mike Grams, I can tell you that these factors relate to physics.
